Neurostructural Integration Technique (NST) is a form of holistic massage developed from the famous osteopath Tim Bowen's Bowen Technique by applied Physiologist, Michael J. Nixon-Livy from Australia in 1995. It combines disciplines like Kinesiology with Osteopathy and many others. It is reputed to enable body to 'communicate better with itself' through stimulating the nervous system in a specific manner. Some claim it to be a refinement of the Bowen Technique (or perhaps it is a 'trademark' issue). A find a practitioner tool can be fond at the second link, although it is best to use a national rather than regional search as some practitioners do not appear to be correctly categorised at present. The third link is from Dr Joseph Mercola's web site, including an article by Nixon-Livy. Mercola believes NFT to be a useful tool in treating CFS and Fibromyalgia patients.

Information Web Sites & E-books:
PhoenixCFS (PCFS) is an excellent resource site with a forum and a number of research articles.
http://phoenix-cfs.org

Dr Joseph Mercola has a number of articles on his web site about health and diet. He also has a book 'Total Health Program' available as a paperback (2003) from Amazon (cheaper) or an e-book from his site (more expensive). He is also selling a variety of health products on his web site, including Whey Healthier and Kefir Starter Pack (freeze dried kefir granules). Delivery times may vary. Dr Mercola is also a health consultant. He also sits on the Board of Directors of the WestonA. Price Foundation. Dr Mercola is no stranger to controversy, and whilst I find the majority of his articles useful, they are rather informal in presentation (i.e. blogs). Dr Mercola sometimes make bold claims without backing these up with hard facts. However that might be said about medicalinsider.com! He does also make the odd blunder. Use your own judgement. Overall his web site is a great resource.

End Fatigue is Dr Jacob Teitelbaum's web site. He sells a range of supplements for CFS. He is also a consultant for CFS and FMS sufferers. He can recommend consultants in your area. His book From Fatigued To Fantastic (listed in the books section below) is also worth buying as a reference guide for certain areas, but contains no information on toxicity and detoxification, and does not strongly differentiate between recommended and less ideal treatments described.

Dr James Wilson's web site Adrenal Fatigue is listed below.

Ian Solley's web site This Cure Works sells an e-book on chronic fatigue syndrome. He uses a few different URLs to target slightly different audiences. The book covers a broad range of material, and contains information on toxicity, its effects, lifestyle, phospholipid exchange, diet and detoxification, and nutritional supplements. The material is based largely upon The BodyBio Detoxx Book by Patricia Kane et al. The Detoxx system is based on the principle of a diet rich in meat, fish, nuts, seeds, essential fatty acids, fruit and vegetables with few starches and grains, to help to mobilise biotoxins in the body - there are additional supporting methods including phospholipid therapy (orally and IV), reduced glutathione, amino acid support, enemas and liver flushes etc. Solley takes this as a base (focussing on oral phospholipid supplementation rather than IV) and adds chelation therapy on top, using the mobiliser Cilantro, and using Chlorella as an intestinal absorbant. He also mentions PCA-Rx, a mobilising and chelating combination product; and briefly mentions antimicrobial herbs. Solley strongly suggests the reader to buy The Patient Detoxx Book and to seek out a physician who has read The BodyBio Detoxx Book (the more comprehensive practitioner's guide.) I was expecting to have all the information I needed in Solley's book when I bought it, but was disappointed to find that he said I needed to buy someone else's book to get a handle on the treatment regime and diet. I was equally disappointed when I bought the Patient Detoxx Book as I found it extremely lacking in details about what the purpose of the diet is, how the supplements work, and hardly mentions biotoxins at all, where they come from and how it works. So after having purchased Solley's book and the book he recommended, I didn't feel I knew enough or understood the subject matter well enough to perform all of the regime with any confidence. It reminds me of Jacob Teitelbaum's Book From Fatigued To Fantastic that contains a few token lines in one chapter on detoxification, and suggests that the reader buys someone else's book to learn about detoxification - and his book was supposed to be about CFIDS. Whilst his book is not bad, to not have any mention of detoxification in a book about treating CFIDS is bordering on criminal. The practitioner Detoxx guide is however much more comprehensive and having purchased it finally years later, I would suggest that the reader ignores the patient book and goes straight for the practitioner guide. It took me several years to really understand the concepts myself (relying on Solley's book and the Patient Detoxx Book), whereas I could have saved myself the effort had I purchased the practitioner book from the start. Solley's ebook, although it touches upon the reasons for cell membrane repair, does not adequately explain how and why the membranes become damaged and what effect this has on cellular function. He also does not really explain the purpose of phosphatidyl choline adequately IMO. If you really wanted to understand these topics, then I would suggest buying Patricia Kane's The BodyBio Detoxx Book over Ian Solley's ebook as it is much more comprehensive in this aspect, not that much more expensive, and comes from a more experienced authority. However, Solley's book does have merit and contains additional types of information. The antimicrobial recommendations are a bit thin on the ground however. The sections on chelation therapy are also rather underdeveloped and based upon a rather crude understanding of chelation and mobilisation. His focus is on the use of Cilantro which is a strong mobiliser and would not be my first choice at the start of a chelation programme as it can result in more Mercury circulating in the system and the patient getting much worse. Cilantro is useful towards the middle or end of a chelation regime, but certainly not the beginning. He makes generalisations about chelating agents like DMSA resulting in reaborption of heavy metals from the GI tract, but I don't think that is true as it is excreted via the kidneys in the urine. Cilantro is a mobiliser and is thus not very good at binding with Mercury and preventing reabsorption - which is why he suggests using Chlorella. I believe Chlorella, even pyrenoidosa, is somewhat overrated as an intestinal binding and I believe that using Metachel and/or Charcoal or Bentonite clay would be better. A useful reference source for chelation therapy is Andrew Hall Cutler's book, Amalgam Illness: Diagnosis and Treatment - whilst you may not agree with all the chelating agents he suggests, it explains the principles of chelation vs mobilisation quite well. This is also explained (for free) on this web site. So whilst Solley's book is quite good in many places, it would not be my first choice for the topics it describes. I feel that it could benefit from more explanation as to why one is doing what one is doing to the novice - and be better structured so that there is less reliance in the Q&A section on explaining core concepts, relaying dosage information, and informing the reader where to find the products mentioned - rather than integrate this information to where these things are actually mentioned in the many body of the book. I am also not that keen on some of the suppliers of supplements he suggests but that could equally be directed at Patricia Kane's books or even Klinghardt as it often comes down to personal preference/bias and what one is used to. In a few instances, as a novice, when I first read his book, I came to the wrong conclusions as I feel some of the explanations were either too high level or ambiguously written. For example, his description of PCA-Rx first mentions that it contains organisms to cleanse the body (referring to probiotics and cleansing the gut) but then mentions a matrix to envelope toxins (i.e. chelation) and I interpreted it as meaning that these mysterious organisms he refers to somehow got into the bloodstream and chelated heavy metals! If he had explained it properly it would have been easier - as well as listing where to buy it as I missed the paragraph in the FAQs about this for some time. The explanations of the roles of Phosphatidyl Choline and Butyrate washed over my head when I first read them and felt that they could have elaborated a little more seeing as they were a core part of the programme. Solley's suggestion to taking half a kilo of probiotics capsules over 50 days as a 'flood' - 36 capsules a day (6 capsules 20 minutes before food 3 times a day and 18 capsules before bed). I don't believe that this is strictly necessary. It is expensive and introduces large amounts of methylcellulose and Magnesium Stearate into the GI tract. I don't think Ian Solley subscribes to the concept of probiotic cells merely seeding the GI tract, to multiply, but seems to favour direct replacement, with the assumption that ingested probiotics won't multiply significantly. I think the book could also benefit from a little introduction to physiology in relevant places rather than throwing about expressions lifted from Patricia Kane's book without sufficient introduction, particularly around cell membrane function and the role of the gallbladder and liver, and how they relate to the supplements he suggest, in more detail. Someone as knowledgeable as Ian Solley about the Detoxx protocol could have greatly improved these areas without too much effort. Hopefully something for the next version. I arrived at many of the same conclusions as Solley (and indeed Patricia Kane to a large degree), independently, over a number of years, which I have documented on this web site, so I believe he is on the right track with his book, bar a few areas that could be refined (mentioned above, mainly chelation therapy related), and suggest it is worth a look if you already have the other books I have mentioned above.

Ian Solley also now offers an e- book entitled 'This Diet Works: Your Food Freedom!', written by Katreena Watherston with a forward about low GI diet by Hazel Du Preez. It is essentially a high protein, low GI Index diet recipe book. It is designed for use by those with food allergies, to treat and cure those allergies, in a similar way that the Paleo, SCD or GAPS diets are designed for this purpose. It is based to some degree on the Detoxx diet but includes some grains such as Quinoa and also some beans. I will be reviewing this book in due course.

The M.E. Association's web site is listed below. It offers some useful information and suggested tests.
www.meassociation.org.uk
Tony Britton of the M.E. Association said of medicalinsider.com that 'We are worlds apart in approach. I don't think there's much we can offer each other.' However, at least he was polite enough to reply, and polite in his response, despite his no doubt extremely sceptical view of medicalinsider and it's 'nutritional' approach. This is more than can be said for the other 'M.E.' Research and Support organisations, who did not even bother to reply to me. In my view they are all very narrowly focussed and not a great credit to sufferers of CFS and ME in the UK.
Dr Charles Shepherd is the Medical Advisor for the M.E. Association, whilst making many correct statements, believes that 'despite the enthusiasm of many alternative practitioenrs (and self help books on the illness) there is still no proven link between ME and Vitamin deficiencies; Mineral and trace element deficiencies, but publication of the magnesium study quoted by Martin Lev is awaited with interest; Candidiasis, intestinal or systemic; Clinical immunodeficiency, although various changes in components of the immune response (e.g. natural killer cells) are being reported; Toxic colon; Measurable hypoglycaemia. The link with multiple food allergies and environmental sensitivities is very debatable...'
Dr Charles Shepherd believes that the main three groups of medically qualified practitioners who are 'treating' 'M.E.' patients are 'psychiatrists, using anti-depressants and behaviour modification therapy; Dr Peter Nixon, from Charing Cross Hospital, who believes that almost all these patients are hyperventilating/overbreathing; and a small group of private doctors, some of whom are charging desperate patients large sums of money for the very speculative approaches to management...' Dr Shepherd does not believe that all three groups are necessarily treating the same condition. In my view, it is much more than this, that each case of 'CFS' or 'ME' is completely different and unique to that individual, and that methods used by various practitioners of measuring progress is often very crude. Whilst there are indeed many doctors charging large sums for somewhat speculative treatments or partially effective treatments, there are indeed some who are providing effective treatment. Dr Shepherd seems to rule out a number of factors contributing to many cases of CFS and ME, on a somewhat arbitrary basis, despite a great deal of empirical evidence to suggest that they do play a factor in the majority of 'M.E.' cases in some capacity; which leads me to believe that he does not really understand what is going on in the body in each case. Whilst dismissing toxicity and nutritional factors, Dr Shepherd does not promote research to actually disprove these factors and to understand the effect they actually do have. He appears to have a binary approach to 'M.E.' People often assume that because of the name, the M.E. Association is at the cutting edge of 'M.E.' research and is representative of the community of M.E. specialists and sufferers, but this is not really the case at all. Action for M.E. broke away from the M.E. Association in the mid 1980s for this reason. Not that Action for M.E. is perfect either, but it reflects the division in opinion, understanding and approach to CFS and ME.

Chlorella Pyrenoidosa is a more nutritious form of Chlorella than Chlorella Vulgaris. Whether Hawaiian Spirulina Pacifica is actually better than Spirulina Platensis is a matter of debate. It is probably best to try smaller quantities of various brands from local suppliers and to see which one agrees with you best, then bulk buy your favourite. It is recommended to stick with a high quality brand, as low quality brands can often contain high levels of heavy metals. Please note that Cyanotech in Hawaii are the only company to actually grow Spirulina Pacifica (which is a sub-strain of Platensis), which is grown only in Hawaii. Various brands resell this Spirulina Pacifica, including Nutrex, Now and MicroOrganics in the UK. Earthrise is a well respected supplier of Spirulina Platensis. Alternative Approaches:
This section is for illustrative purposes. The web sites below are NOT being promoted or recommended, but are included to compare what you have learnt on this web site with some other approaches available. This will hopefully help to increase your understanding of the core principles of cause and treatment, so you can build a picture of what types of treatment are out there, and thus help you determine what type of consultant you want to use and what type you want to avoid, and to ultimately make up your own mind. Some of these methods I personally like very much and use many of the ideas promoted on this site, but believe focus on perhaps too narrow a subset of possible areas. Some of these are methods that I have no personal experience of and has no opinion on presently, using similar (but not identical) principles to treat specific disorders discussed on this site. Other methods use an entirely different approach to tackling some of the bio-chemical or skeletal disorders described on this web site and are not something that I personally recommend. However, each person must choose their own path and make up their own mind. This is why they are included. I do not however recommend reading these links until you have a reasonable working knowledge of all the concepts on this web site or you may have your head filled with left-field ideas about CFS treatment with no real understanding of what the more 'sensible' or first 'port of call' approaches.

General Methods, Techniques and Treatments:
The Gabriel Method is a dieting and health restoration method devised by Jon Gabriel. It does not use dieting but utilising the body's own internal logic about whether it 'wants' to gain weight or lose weight. His approach to losing weight is said to be backed by solid, cutting edge obesity research from over four years of full- time investigation of the roles of biochemistry, neurobiology, quantum physics and human consciousness in weight-loss.

Field Control Therpay (FCT) is an integrative system of medicine created by New York physician, Savely Yurkovsky, M.D. It is a type of therapy using Bio-Resonance Testing to identify sources of toxins and harmful micro-organisms in the body and special Homeopathic remedies to encourage the body's natural detoxification pathways and to support the organs and restore cellular energy fields (providing a coherent energy pattern to the body in the homeopathics which is said to help restore the body's natural coherent energy pattern by communicating with the body in energetic terms), rather than rely on chemical means to remove toxins, which is believed to ineffective or to drive the 'cause' of the disease deeper.
'The homeopathic remedies used in F.C.T. are unlike that of classical homeopathy. F.C.T. uses causative homeopathy (isopathy) involving nosodes which are made from the bioenergetic signatures of actual toxins such as mercury and candida and sarcodes which are made from the bioenergetic signatures organs.'
FCT seems to use principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and toxicology and mainstream medicine, and also 'Quantum Physics.' The methods of identification and the understanding of the mechanics of the illnesses seem to be shared with those described on medicalinsider.com, but with a different route ore more speicalised route in terms of actual treatment.

Dr David Mickel's web site, about Mickel Therapy, is listed below. This takes the approach of treating hypothalamic dysfunction, a frequent contributor to CFS in many patients, by viewing the body-mind as one and looking at the symptoms as a message, and to work with the body intelligence to stop the body sending the messages or symptoms. Many elements of this approach are explored on medicalinsider.com, in addition to many other factors.

Cellular Memory Release (CMR) is a system devised by Luis Diaz, who comes from a background in Specialised Kinesiology & Touch for Health, Oriental Medicine, Shaitsu, Reiki, Homeopathy, Naturopathy, Nutrition and Herbology. CMR is reputed to be an 'effective, practical synthesis of tools for accessing and freeing the trapped, stagnant life force held inside the cells of your body. The crystallization of this life force within the cellular memory of your being is the root cause of most manifested life imbalances, be it physical, emotional, psychological or spiritual. There is a vast intelligence in you just waiting to set you free. It has the wisdom to heal, the knowledge to share, and the information to help show you how to live life at your maximum potential.' It works on the basis of redressing the balance between 'Positive Emotional Charge' and 'Negative Emotional Charge' of individual cells, working with emotional issues to release negative cellular memory.

The Homeostatis Protocol by Blake Sawyer (Triad) is a method recommended for general health. The general philosophy is similar to that on this web site, e.g. detoxification, water ionisers, immune system support etc. However it differs in that it does not recommend mineral and vitamin supplements as they are claimed to 'rob' the body of nutrition and have the opposite effect intended. The protocol also recommends fixed supplements rather than an adaptive approach. There are a number of big claims too in the protocol, in that it is claimed to be able to cure any number of complex 'untreatable' illnesses (an FDA warning letter to Triad is shown in a link below). The Homeostasis Protocol is not described on the web site, but is broadly similar in certain respects to the 'Athlete's Protocol, which is'. A booklet on the Homeostasis Protocol is available when LifeWave products or other supplements are ordered from Triad. Energizing Athletes web site is also listed in the Health Supplements sectiona above - customer service is excellent and prices are very competitive.

Inversion Therapy is a type of exercise using an Inversion Table commonly found in some gyms, except that instead of using them for extreme abdominal exercises such as sit ups or crunches at an extreme gradient, one simply hangs upside down. This is said to increase circulation to the head, which is often impaired in those with CFS and/or low blood pressure. Being inverted is also said to relax the muscles and tendons. I have not personally tried it in this context, but have friends whose CFS conditions have benefitted from this practice.

HPI (Human Probiotic Infusion) Therapy, a.k.a. Fecal Transplant, Fecal Transfusion or Fecal Bacteriotherapy, is a type of probiotic therapy for IBS where a course of (oral) antibiotics is first employed to kill off all bacteria in the colon (and small intestine), followed by an intensive high strength probiotic infusion 'up the bottom' (i.e. to the colon only and not the small intestine, which has the potential to cause bad bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine and yeast overgrowth in the the large and small intestines if not managed properly) or down a tube from the nose directly into the small intestine. It is said to cure most IBS cases, although a 'cure' (a temporary alleviation in symptoms?) for CFS cases is reported to be around the 50% mark in the small group of patients who engaged this treatment.

The Marshall Protocol is an anti-biotic based treatment devised by Trevor Marshall for systematic mycoplasma (CWD or Cell Wall Deficient bacterial) infection, one potential factor in CFS sufferers. The Guaifenesin Protocol as described by The Fibromyalgia Center centres around abstaining from dietary sources of salicylic compounds and other compounds for the treatment of FMS. It works on the basis that the active cause of FMS is Phosphate accumulation, and that Guaifenesin helps to bind with Phosphorus in the Kidneys to remove it. Guaifenesin's affinity for Phosphates is blocked by Salicylates.

The National M.E. Centre and Centre for Fatigue Syndromes is a centre/clinic at Old Harold Wood Hospital Site, in Romford, Essex. Consultants include Dr Betty Dowsett (microbiologist) and Prof. Leslie Findley (neurologist). Findley is also a senior neurologist at the Essex Neurosciences Unit of the Havering Hospital NHS Trust based at Queens Hospital in Romford, Essex, and according to one of my associates has been known to assist NHS patients in their dealings with their GPs to receive appropriate diagnosis rather than the 'brush off' which is not unusual amongst the NHS's GPs. However, other patients have reported still being prescribed GET and (exercise) Pacing based 'treatments' by Dr Findley which would indicate perhaps less than an ideal approach to treatment and indeed causality. I cannot comment on their general understanding and approach to holistic medicine and appropriateness of diagnosis or treatment however, but from third hand information it does not instill a huge amount of confidence. But it is a start of sorts.

German New Medicine (GNM) developed by Dr Ryke Geerd Hamer, M.D., is a type of treatment for cancer which operates on the basis of stress being a major factor in the livers of cancer patients prior to developing cancer (based on empirical observation and also on the known effects that long term chronic stress has on the immune system). Dr Hamer believes that cancer in of itself cannot kill, but that the stress component certain allows it to do so. I believe that whilst there is some logic here, to focus purely on the psychological (which is of fundamental importance in such cases in my opinion), it would be foolish to ignore detoxification protocols and diet changes, and indeed other types of treatment. Perhaps this is an over-simplification of GNM. Dr Hamer claims to have been plagiarised by many organisations and groups over the last 20 years or so, including NLP and even Scientology.

The Perrin Technique is an osteopathic approach to getting the spinal fluid and lympathic system moving, in order to remove toxins from the body. This is perhaps similar to Craniosacral Therapy or Lymphatic Drainage Massage, but in my opinion, one part of a wider treatment programme, and certainly not a suitable sole treatment for CFS. The Perrin Technique was created/adapted by Dr Raymond Perrin intended to diagnose, treat and cure CFS and ME patients. The Perrin Clinic, run by Dr Perrin, is located in Manchester in the UK.

The Whitcomb Method is a spinal-based treatment for FMS, devised by Dr Paul Whitcomb, a Chiropractor. The Whitcomb Method promotes the idea of specialist spinal treatment to resolve all biochemical problems, regarded as the chief causative of these problems, as opposed to examining a patient's biochemical problems and treating these. Some (but not all) FMS patients do appear to have skeletal problems as a factor in their overall condition (including a history of whiplash). Are the rest of FMS sufferers actually suffering from postural problems with no accident history? Clearly this is strongly debated. The second web site is an interview with Dr Whitcomb. As of 2008, Whitcomb has not taught anyone else his technique.

Manipulation Under Anaesthesia or MUA is a procedure where a person is anaesthetised and various osteopathic style manipulations are performed in order to break down scar tissue. It sounds similar to osteopathy, or rather deep tissue massage and stretching, except that it removes the brain and the pain barrier from the equation in order to go further. It is more focussed on lengthening the muscles and breaking down scar tissue and lesions of the muscles around the spine than actual joint and vertebrae manipulation. To what extent do the muscles react to such manipulation after the event is not known by myself - which occurs when the nervous system is fully engaged during normal osteopathy to some extent (going against the path or resistance rather than unfolding the resistance itself). This seems to be a medical approach to the problem, to bypass the perceived hurdle rather than to try less invasive approach. Dr Eric Waldorf's web site is shown below.
